Chapter 10

“I thought I was clear when I spoke to each of you previously,” Mr. Jones said. “I’m planning my return to the agency, and I wanted a chance to get to know some of the younger agents better before I do so.”

Paul nodded. “That’s what you said, but I suppose I wanted more. What more do you need to know about us?”

Cameron laughed. “He needs to know which of us are in Mr. Brown’s pocket. That’s why we’re here. Mr. Brown isn’t going to give up the job easily. Mr. Jones is going to have to fight hard to get his job back, and he’s going to need people on his side. We’re here so he can try to persuade us to be on his side when the fighting starts.”

“Surely it’s just up to Smith,” Rory said.

“Maybe. Or maybe it’s up to the people around Smith,” Cameron said. “And those people seem quite happy with Mr. Brown, at least for the moment.”

“Do you really think you’re going to have to fight to get your job back?” Gracie asked Mr. Jones.

He shrugged. “I suspect that Brown would rather I didn’t return.”

“If I were you and living here forever were an option, I’d let Mr. Brown keep my job,” Rory said. “The police inspector got quite cross with me when he was trying to ask me questions because I kept getting distracted by all the books in the library. I hope the police are finished in there. I want to spend the rest of my weekend perusing the shelves.”

“Me too,” Janet said.

“I’d prefer to return to work,” Mr. Jones said. “I’ve been idle for long enough.”

“Maybe you should try working in the field for a while,” Cameron said. “You could work for Mr. Brown.”

“That isn’t an option,” Mr. Jones said icily.

Janet took a bite of her chicken. It was good, but she barely noticed. Judy had eaten all of her rice and was picking at her vegetables. Edward’s plate was nearly empty.

“I don’t think it really matters,” Gracie said. “Why we were invited, I mean. Right now, all that really matters is finding out what happened to Adam.”

“And if you can’t see that what happened to Adam is tied up in why we’re all here, then you’re an idiot,” Cameron said.

Gracie flushed. “That was uncalled for,” she said.

“You must see that it’s all connected, then,” Cameron said. “We just have to work out whether Adam was on Team Jones or Team Brown.”

Judy rolled her eyes. “We aren’t teenagers. We don’t have to pick teams.”

“But we all have, like it or not,” Cameron said. “Some of us prefer working under Mr. Brown and others of us would like to see Mr. Jones return. The question is, which side was Adam on?”

Everyone looked at Judy. She flushed.

“I’ve no idea. It wasn’t something we discussed,” she said. “And I don’t see why it matters.”

“It matters because that seems the most likely motive for Adam’s murder,” Cameron said, speaking slowly as if he were explaining things to a small child.
